A former executive of Singapore’s casino regulator was sentenced to 25 months jail on Monday after pleading guilty to stealing and selling more than SG$93,000 (US$70,000) worth of printer cartridges from his employer.
The Straits Times reports that 45-year-old Zulkiflie Yacob misappropriated over 750 cartridges from the Casino Regulatory Authority (CRA) – which has since been swallowed by the new Gambling Regulatory Authority ku bet (GRA) – between April 2016 and October 2018.
Zulkiflie, whose job with the CRA was to procure office supplies, then sold the cartridges via online marketplace Carousell. He was eventually caught when colleagues noticed a major discrepancy between the number of cartridges purchased, used and left in stock.
The Deputy Public prosecutor said Zulkiflie committed his crime “with the intention of dishonestly misappropriating and selling some of these printer cartridges, and pocketing the sales proceeds.
“During the course of investigations, the accused revealed that he declared financial embarrassment in 2015 and therefore used the monies received from the sale of the dishonestly misappropriated printer cartridges to pay his bills and expenses.”
Zulkiflie made partial restitution of SG$25,000 to the GRA in January, The Straits Times revealed.
