THE national Under-22 squad face a daunting task ahead to avoid an early exit from the Cambodia SEA Games after they were beaten 0-2 by their traditional rivals Thailand at the Prince Stadium in Phnom Penh. The squad coached by E. Elavarasan appeared to struggle to find their footing in the first half of the match, which got under way in scorching heat reaching 39°C yesterday. The bumpy pitch made conditions worse and the players struggled to put their game together. The heat, however, did not prevent the Thais from piling up the pressure. They got several shots on target, keeping Malaysian goalkeeper Sikh Izhan Nazrel Sikh Azman on his toes throughout the first half. The fatigue factor got to Malaysia’s defence eventually as Anan Yodsangwal eventually broke the deadlock after finishing off a Thai counter-attack in the 73rd minute. The Malaysian team had hardly enough time to catch their breath before they conceded a second goal after Yotsakon Burapha slotted the ball past keeper Izhan in the 84th minute to confirm full points for Thailand. It is the first defeat for Malaysia in Group B and the outcome confined Elavarasan’s boys to third spot after two matches. He advised his boys to accept the loss and not to make playing in the heat an excuse.“Here the weather is really different and players need to adapt but we do not want to blame anything.“Yes, we lost 0-2 and they had better chances and scored goals.“We kept hoping for one special thing to happen but it didn’t pan out, so we need to accept this loss,” he said, adding that he was optimistic about their chances to qualify for the semi-finals in light of this loss.Malaysia had beaten Laos 5-1 in their opening group match on Wednesday.Malaysia will face another tough challenge against defending champions Vietnam tomorrow before wrapping up their final group match against Singapore three days later.Vietnam and Thailand, who are 16-time champions at the SEA Games stage, are the only unbeaten teams in Group B with six points from two wins.Report it to us.Thank you for your report!
